CYP1A2: The Fast vs. Slow Metabolizer Gene

Approximately 95% of caffeine metabolism occurs in the liver via the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme. A specific genetic variation determines how much of this enzyme you produce, categorizing you as a fast or slow metabolizer.
The Genetic Split
Individuals with the *1A/*1A genotype are "fast metabolizers." They clear caffeine rapidly, often boasting a half-life of 2-3 hours. Those with a *1F allele are "slow metabolizers," where half-life can extend to 8-10 hours.
Cardiovascular Implications
Studies have shown that for slow metabolizers, heavy caffeine consumption (>300mg/day) is associated with an increased risk of hypertension and non-fatal myocardial infarction. Fast metabolizers do not show this elevated risk.
